About Gili Trawangan
Gili Trawangan is one of three islands that form the Gili Islands, located just off the northwest coast of Lombok. Alongside Gili Air and Gili Meno, the island is known for its beautiful beaches, diverse marine ecosystem and distinctive island lifestyle.
As the largest and most developed island in the group, Gili Trawangan offers the widest range of restaurants, activities and services while still maintaining the relaxed atmosphere of a tropical escape. This balance makes it a popular choice for travellers who want access to memorable experiences without sacrificing comfort and convenience.
The island’s history is closely connected to the ocean. For generations, local communities relied on fishing and marine resources, shaping a way of life that remains part of the island’s identity today. While tourism has transformed Gili Trawangan into an international destination, the island continues to reflect a unique blend of local traditions, coastal landscapes and modern island hospitality.
The Character of Gili Trawangan
What makes Gili Trawangan distinctive is its balance between accessibility and escape. Compared with Gili Air and Gili Meno, the island offers more dining options, activities and connections, making it a convenient base for travellers who want to explore the wider Gili Islands.
At the same time, Gili Trawangan has preserved the slower rhythm that defines island life. Without cars or motorised traffic, visitors move around by bicycle, walking or traditional cidomo carts, creating a more relaxed way to discover beaches, local communities and coastal landscapes.
The island is best experienced without rushing. A morning swim, a bicycle ride along the coast, a long lunch by the sea and a sunset walk are simple moments that capture the essence of Gili Trawangan.
